英作文を始めたばかりの頃は、短文が細切れになってしまう「カッコ悪さ」に悩んだ人も多いと思います。
接続詞 ” and ” を使用して短文をつなぐと細切れだった短文が文章となり、それなりの体を整えたように見えます。
① つなぐ2つの文章の意味合いに強い関連性があるか
②つなぐ2つの文章の主語は同じであるか
③文頭で ” And ” を使用しない

- This is a sacred ceremony that has continued over 250 years.
- And the man was awarded as the “Man of the fortune.
Delete “And” at the beginning of this sentence. While “and” is used to join thoughts, there is typically a relationship between the thoughts. Here, there is nothing obviously tying this sentence to the previous, so “And” is unnecessary.
「 ” and ” は2つの思考をつなぎ合わせる際に使用するのですが、それらの思考には関連性がなければなりません。作文における2つの思考には関連性が見られず、” and ” を使用する必要はないのです。
もう一つの作文です
- “Ebisu” is one of the seven Japanese popular gods and the god represents business prosperity.
This sentence is awkward because the 2 halves are forced together with “and.” More natural ways to say this are:
「中途半端な２つの文章が “and” によって強制的に繋がれており、違和感があります」
↓
“Ebisu” is one of the seven popular Japanese gods; it represents business prosperity.”
「 ” ; ” を使用して繋ぐ」
Or: (もしくは)
“Ebisu,” one of the seven popular Japanese gods, represents business prosperity.”
「 ”Ebisu” として最前部に置いて、２つの文章をカンマで繋ぐ 」
“and” を使用して文章をつなぐ際に、主語が不明確になったり、そもそもの意味に誤解を生じさせたりすることがありますね。
でもシンプルに文章を短くして書いたのでは箇条書きのようになってしまって味気ないし、テクニックが必要です。
文頭における ” and ” の使用
今回の学びなおしによる気づきの効果により、文頭における ” and ” の使用に注意を払うようになりました。会社同僚の英文メールを見ていても、多用されています。仮に2つの思考に関連性があるとしても、文法マナー上、文頭における ” and ” の使用は良くないようですので今は控えています。
