When reading, people usually add a mental pause at the end of each paragraph. When speaking, this is just as important. Use long pauses (about 1½ seconds) in your speech whenever you are changing from one key idea to the next. You can separate two ‘key points’ from one another.

[Level 7-9] The Other Part of the Gender Pay Gap

It’s not just base pay that women earn less of compared to men in the U.S. workforce. Research by Felice Klein, professor of business management from Boise St. University, and her colleagues, highlights that female employees also receive less equity-based awards.
These are stock grants, in which employees are offered shares in the firm as a form of pay, and stock option grants that offer the right to buy company stock at a preset price in the future.
Aaron D. Hill of the University of Florida, Ryan Hammond at the data storage company Pure Storage, Ryan Stice-Lusvardi at Stanford University and Klein analysed data from two technology organizations. They found a gender gap for equity-based awards ranging from 15% to 30% and wanted to find the reasons for this discrepancy.
Using a fictitious company, the team ran an experiment designed to give equal male and female representation to specific employee profiles. This helped to ensure that any differences between the profiles did not affect the results. Participating managers read the employees’ performance reviews and distributed stock options based on one of two criteria: retaining talent and recognizing high potential employees. The results showed that the fictional employees with male names got significantly more bonuses on retention.
Part of the reason this gender gap in equity awards exists is down to why they are handed out in the first place. A survey of 217 companies found that almost 90% said retention was the main objective of their stock option program. Studies have shown that men are more likely viewed as being more important to retain in a company, as they are more prone to leaving for a rival company. As a result, men are likely to receive more equity-based awards than women.
While some companies are working hard to address gender inequality, Klein said that the findings suggest that efforts should be applied more broadly to all forms of pay.
