— Activity —- Grammer rules
RULE 1: The present perfect tense is formed with the auxiliary verb HAVE + the past participle. HAVE as an auxiliary verb can contract with the subject pronoun unlike HAVE as a main verb, which cannot contract with the subject pronoun.
ルール1:現在完了形は、助動詞HAVE +過去分詞で形成されます。助動詞としてのHAVEは、主語代名詞と契約できない主動詞としてのHAVEとは異なり、主語代名詞と短縮することができます。
EXAMPLE: I have (auxiliary/helping verb) + driven (main verb, past participle). = HAVE is used as an auxiliary which supports the main verb DRIVEN.
I have (main verb, simple present tense) a pen. = HAVE is used as a verb for possession, making it the main verb of the sentence.
RULE 2: The past participle of all regular verbs and some irregular verbs, is the same as the past tense form.
規則2:すべての規則動詞といくつかの不規則動詞の過去分詞は、過去形と同じです。
EXAMPLE: I washed the dishes yesterday. (past tense)
I’ve (I+have) washed dishes for many years. (present perfect tense)
RULE 3: Most irregular verbs have a different past participle form.
規則3:ほとんどの不規則動詞は、過去分詞の形が異なります。
EXAMPLE:
BASE FORM PAST PAST PARTICIPLE
be was/were been
do did done
draw drew drawn
drive drove driven
eat ate eaten
fall fell fallen
fly flew flown
get got gotten
go went g

Listening Focus
- What do small changes at McDonald’s cause?
- What did Chris Kempczinski say when asked about their unhealthy menu?
- What is one area that Kempczinski is making an investment in?
Chris Kempczinski occupies the chief executive position of McDonald’s, leading more than 39,000 restaurants in 120 countries with around two million employees. Small changes at McDonald’s cause vast ripple effects globally in supply chains, wages, and consumer behavior.
With so many drive-through restaurants, McDonald’s was well prepared for the pandemic’s social distancing era, with sales booming in 2020 and 2021. The business basically had to pivot to an entirely drive-through, delivery, and curbside pickup business. He thinks that it will change the way the business operates in a lasting way.
In a recent interview, when asked about McDonald’s notoriously unhealthy menu, he said, “Our menu is very Darwinian. We will put on the menu what our customers are looking to buy. We do have healthier choice options on the menu. And we have more indulgent choices on the menu. Ultimately, we leave it to the customer to make those choices.”
The minimum wage was recently raised at company-owned restaurants. Mr. Kempczinski explains that he does not control wages at the vast majority of restaurants, which are owned by franchisees.
One area he is making an investment in is plant-based food and ensuring parity-pricing so money doesn’t influence the choice of the less expensive chicken and beef. They could also automate a lot of areas in the kitchen. Another area that they are investing in is the potential around voice recognition in the drive-through, perhaps to have an Alexa-type of service that takes your order.
