An April Fool’s prank could lead to criminal charges against budget airline Thai Vietjet. On April 1, 2022, the airline’s official Twitter account tweeted that the airline was launching a new international route between Munich, Germany, and the Thai province of Nan.
This announcement stirred anger among ultra-royalists and led to threats of boycotts against the airline. An activist lawyer filed a complaint with the police claiming that Thai Vietjet had insulted Thailand’s King and committed computer crimes.
The police will review the facts to decide whether or not to pursue criminal charges against the airline’s staff. Strict laws in Thailand make defaming the monarchy a criminal act punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
The airline has since removed the offending tweet. The next day, it apologized, saying that senior management was unaware of the tweet that advertised a “flight route between a province in Thailand and a city in Europe, which led to many public reactions.”
The airline’s CEO responded to the backlash by saying the staff responsible for the tweet had been suspended pending an investigation.
The tweet did not mention the 69-year-old king, who was coronated in 2019. Though he is traditionally seen as semi-divine and above criticism, in recent years, some activists have openly criticized the king for spending much of his time in Germany.
Since the student-led protests began in 2020, at least 183 people have been charged with insulting the monarchy.
