Modesty Leaves Finest Impression for Cooperative Teams
Research published by the American Psychological Association found people who signal their wealth and social status may be seen as uncooperative.

Studies have shown that people think of those who appear to be well-off as being more intelligent, disciplined, and competent than those who do not. However, new research has found that people who display their social status care more about themselves than others and are less willing to collaborate.

More than 2,800 people in six experiments examined choices about when to signal status or modesty and measured how people responded.

In one experiment, people evaluated social media profiles to find cooperative, selfless, and generous people to join their community. The researchers found that modest profiles were more likely to be chosen than luxury profiles. They rated those people as wealthier, more concerned with their status, and less likely to care about others.

Another experiment asked people to choose what to wear for a new profile picture. Half of the participants had to try to appear cooperative. People were much less likely to choose to wear luxury clothes than unbranded clothes.

Researchers suggest that luxury status signaling has advantages for competitive team members and that people will change how they present themselves depending on their social goals. This consideration is more important in the social media era, especially when people may want to impress others while also showing they can be a team player.
