ココが今回のポイントです。
海外営業25年の私には、実は “隠れネイティブ・チェッカー” がいて、会社に提出する英文を事前にチェックしてくれたりしています。
チェッカーは趣味で付き合いのある方の中から3名程を選んで頼んでいるのですが、皆さん、エンジニアの方です。
エンジニアは普段、文章を書くことが多く、特に管理職になると部下の管理も重要な職務となる為、”気がいい文才のある人” である確率が高いのです。
さて、冒頭のミッション・インポッシブルのシーンに戻ります。

チェッカーのアドバイスです
“If” implies choice with no obligation. When using “if” the underlying meaning implied is the reader is free to make whatever choice he wants, and the writer has no preference either way.
「ifを使用する場合は読み手に対して選択肢があることを示唆しています」
In the Mission Impossible phrase, remember that the agent (Tom Cruise) is employed by the agency (I forget which) and while it looks like they are giving him a choice to not accept the mission, they intend to imply that he has an obligation to accept the mission.
「ミッション・インポッシブルの状況のようにエージェントには雇い主がおり、その指令は絶対的です。選択肢を与えているように見えるのですが強制である意思が含まれています」
While there are many rules in choosing “should” or “if,” the ones I find most useful are these. “Should” implies duty or obligation.
「様々な使い分けが必要な “should” と “if” ですが、効果的な基準は以上となります。”should” には義務の意味が込められているのです
“仮定法” の倒置は、きちんと理解していなくても何となく会話やメールも成立してしまいますので機会がある時に、きちんと復習をしておきたいです。
